Latin star Maluma rocks Privilege

Colombian musical magic.

Bringing Latin and urban artists to Ibiza, Brutal has taken up regular residence on Saturday nights at Privilege, combing sensual music with colourful production. Upping the ante, Grammy award-winning singer Maluma performed for a special one-off last Thursday.

A live concert from such a prolific performance attracted the attention of both local and international holidaying clientele, so was tipped to be a busy night. We went along to see what this Colombian star had to offer Ibiza.

As we arrived just after 01:00, DJ Eddie Queen was warming up the crowd with an exciting mix of reggaeton. Bright lights illuminated the gyrating crowd as queen scratches in another sumptuous blend.

Purple and blue blends of disco lights spun around the dance floor as he dropped a positively essential Latin anthem - Con Calma - by the godfather of the entire scene Daddy Yankee.

A huge curtain shrouded the back of the stage until the arrival of the main man of the evening, Maluma. Before the imminent landing of the venerated artist, a switch up in the music brought Dirty Diana. Can't beat a bit of Michael Jackson.

In a symphony of guitar solos and synchronised Co2 blasts, Maluma took to the stage. The first song lifted the crowd transfixed by the majestic singer. Moving swiftly into Corazón, the singer only stopped briefly to whip the excitement in the crowd, met with cheers and whistles.

Admittedly reggeaton isn't my usual cup of tea, but I know a jam when I hear one. Blasted through radios Spanish speaking world, his famous collab with Shakira was met with enjoyment from the crowd.

Dancers flanked Maluma, marching along to the moombahton style beat. Accompanied by laser drenched production, this concert was an all-around hit.

Maluma was joined by a full band, an integral part of the entire experience. Those guitar riffs and drum beats sound so much sweeter when played live.

Maluma was dressed in a tracksuit emblazoned with 11:11, his latest album release. Midway through the set, he slowed the pace down to a melodic tone, where the artist thanked everyone for coming out.

Smooth acoustic sounds echoed around the cavernous room. Next, he effortlessly moved into a performance of the smash hit 11 PM. As he sang, the crowd chorused the tune back to him as arms swayed from side to side.

The backing band lit by neon visuals descended in a cinematic song epic. Maluma danced around green lasers to a thudding beat as he brought the energy up belting out HP.

The set continued with a string of hits, even dipping into the catalogue of his peers Nicky Jam & J Balvin for a rendition of the song X.

When you listen to the sonic makeup of the Latin phenomenon that has swept the world, you can hear elements of all popular urban genres from trap to hip hop. It is no wonder that this scene has swept the world and landed in a party island like Ibiza.

As streamers and confetti covered the crowd, the performance reached its finale. The band and Maluma took to the stage one last time for an encore.

Maluma came out in a Spanish national football shirt, a testimony to his love of the sport. Grinning as the crowd chanted one last time, he sang out Felices Los 4 with sexy samba dancers alongside him while sparks flew from the pyrotechnics.

If you happened to have missed this concert then, rest assured that Brutal will be bringing more Latin stars to rock the dancefloor of Privilege. Darrel & Farina, Farruko, Manuel Turizo, Karol G and many more are set to appear over the summer weeks. Full details are below.
