Camping Out in Ibiza

Sleeping out under Ibiza's clear, star-laden skies sounds dead romantic doesn't it?

Sleeping out under Ibiza's clear, star-laden skies sounds dead romantic doesn't it? Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth for hundreds of immigrants to the island thanks to a senseless and shameful situation down at the National Police 'comisaría' (headquarters).

These days up to 80 people per night, whose only problem is not having Spanish nationality, are obliged to sleep in inhumane third world conditions to renew their papers to remain here legally. Why? Because the administration at the comisaría can only cope with a certain number, 33, of cases per day.

An already bad situation was exacerbated when Head Office in Palma sent out a mountain of letters in one tranche which led to so many people appearing at the same time. However the system of queuing at the comisaría has been ridiculously bad for years with poor unfortunates, myself included, having to get there at 4 am to have a hope of being seen.

Now thankfully, after a massive brainstorming session, the top admin bods in the state department have come up with an amazing idea. They've called it an 'appointment system.' Revolutionary in concept it means that would be clients can go down (phone, what's that?) request an appointment and then turn up (probably several months later) and regularise their residency situation. Isn't life simple now?
