One of the strangest traditions on the island is the annual race to the cathedral, high atop Dalt Vila, every New Years Eve. You'd think people's preparations for a hard night's partying would involve going to the hairdressers or maybe having a shower, but 169 competitors last year preferred a lung bursting run up the steep cobbled streets of the old town for the honour of being first to the summit. This year the Ibiza athletic club is expecting many more to join in the 'fun,' with categories for different classes of runner from young to old. The races start quite close to the Casino at 4.30 PM and the prizegiving takes place in the Vara de Rey at 6.30 PM, by which time we will know if last year's winning time of 7 minutes 21 seconds has been beaten.
