EP review: Dino Lenny 'This Is Not The End'

An unpredictable, yet satisfying soundscape created by one of the most diverse producers around.

Artist: Dino Lenny
EP: This Is Not The End
Label: Fine Human Records
Release date: 02/02/15

Dino Lenny is an Italian house producer and intriguing artist with a well-rounded, yet unusual career in comparison to most. The release of the original mix This Is Not The End Part 1 left me craving for more in 2014, intrigued to discover the depths of Part 2. The EP was released as part of his new label ‘Fine Human Records' with the hope to infuse some more soul and emotion back into techno.

This Is Not The End kicks off with a steady, drumming rhythm firmly in the foreground, steered by an unravelling bassline which ultimately streamlines the musical experience. Layers of soothing synths and dreamy vocal snippets certainly help to deliver a rare balance of sound, before the track begins to drop continuous kicks of snare driving the rhythm with Dino's renowned techno twist. After the ever-so captivating climax, the edgy drum loops form an authentic, quirky sound to wind down the impressive track.

The production of Headphones is similar, although it certainly has a distinct quality about the sound that immediately gets you hooked. A powerful kick fuels the core lead by carefully crafted, rapid sci-fi samples, progressive hi-hats and ascending trance-like loops drawing the listener into a state of awe. The highlight of this track is the sudden intermezzo of piano, creating a blissful haven. The off-beat placement of sensual vocals by the genius himself is the ultimate game changer, transforming the track from deep techy beats to an appeasing, airy vibe.

The wait for Part 2 was undoubtedly worthwhile and exceeded all expectations as Fine Human Records' debut release. This EP deserves ultimate appreciation for raw emotion delivered throughout.
