Non Standard Procedure from Denia to Ibiza

The journey is a logistical nightmare

The normal way of crossing the stretch between Denia, on the mainland, and Ibiza is a 4 hour comfortable ferry ride. Imagine then, doing the 58 nautical mile trip (around 110 km) using only a kite, a board and the power of the wind!

That's what keen kitesurfer David Alvelino will be doing sometime this week if all goes according to plan. The journey is a logistical nightmare, it's taken an age to get the relevant permissions from the ports authorities and they expire on 16th March. The wind has to be between 12 and 22 knots and only north or nor'westerly winds will do.

If everything gels, then Alvelino will step into the sea at Portet beach in Denia and will reach land again some 5 hours later at San Antonio's Arenal beach. His main fear about the crossing is the effect of being in the same position for so long and so he'll be accompanied all the way by support vessels with which he'll be in radio contact in case he needs assistance.
