Over two years ago we ran a story in Spotlight news about the 'Bicing' scheme that the Ibiza town hall was going to introduce. Well, guess what, it still hasn't got off the ground.

They now tell us that the scheme 'could' be in place by this summer. To reiterate for a third time what happens: the council supply 500 bikes based in 50 bike stations dotted around the town. Users pay a fee - €35 a year for residents or €6 for 3 days and €12 for 7 days (ideal for tourists) – and receive a swipe card which releases the bike from the station and notifies a central computer when it is returned to any of the other stations. It's hoped to encourage the use of the bikes for short (average 20 minutes) journeys throughout the day.

We now learn that the scheme will be called Eibici and that it will cost about €1.4 million to run it for the next 10 years. One drastic measure that the council is considering making to increase the safety for cyclists in Ibiza town is imposing a blanket speed limit of 30 kph all around the city.
