Ibiza Coast by Numbers
Spain's Ministry of the Environment tells us that last year, the Balearic Coastline was crammed with no less than 7,116 foreign tourists per kilometre! Statisticians from their department of Pointless Projects also add that the Balearics were 4th in the ranking of Spain's Autonomous Communities, with Cataluña (21,807) at the top and Asturias (408) at the bottom.
With 52 million foreigners visiting Spain for a holiday last year are these figures, which were produced in a couple of hours between elevenses and home time at One O'clock, relevant?
Well, not all of Spain's Autonomous Communities have a coastline, Madrid, Castilla La mancha and Castilla Leon to name but three. Island Communities like the Canaries and Balearics are surrounded by sea and have a far greater proportion of coastline to land area, and Spain's long northern coast is visited by very few foreigners.
Still, it's a good excuse to publish a photo of Cala Tarida beach in Ibiza, and remember, those 7000 odd tourists per kilometre aren't all on the beach at the same time!
