12,493 vehicles were caught speeding

The radars to catch speeding motorists on the Ibiza to San Antonio road have been in operation for almost a year now and the statistics just released by the traffic Department make interesting reading.

From January to October a total of 12,493 vehicles were caught speeding and a penalty issued to the driver – that's an average of 41 a day. Further analysis of the figures reveals that despite the publicity given to the inauguration of the new high tech system, over 25% of the island's speedsters were caught in just one month – January!

Of course it might make life easier for us all if we knew what the speed limits were. It was announced last June that top speed would be 100 kilometres per hour on the road, but by the time all the bus stops, traffic islands, slip roads and tunnels were taken into account a mere 3 kilometres of the 18 kilometre road was increased to 100!

Quite by chance, and remember this is Ibiza, the two radars (one in each direction) are both set for different speeds, one for 80 and one for 100. My advice would be never travel faster than 80 kph, because let's face it, you don't get any brownie points for punctuality here.
