There may be a recession but sales of Ibiza's traditional tipple, Hierbas, are on the up and up. Stats just released show that sales went up by 9% in 2008 when 22,000 more litres were produced than in 2007.

The aniseed flavoured drink is produced by three main players in Ibiza; MarĂ Mayans, Licores Aniseta and Can Rich. Around 78% of their production is destined for the home market though the export market is now taking off with a sales increase of 13% - mainly in the countries of the European Union.

Legends abound about the properties of Hierbas – it makes men handsome and women fertile – is just one of them, but one thing is for sure the rosemary and thyme used in its making help with rheumatism and coughs.

Bon Profit – Good Health!
