500 bikes are available in 'stations'
Way back in January 2008 we told you about a scheme called 'bicing' that the Council planned to introduce in Ibiza. Well, it looks like it's finally going to happen by December this year.
The scheme involves a system of membership of a bike 'club' whereby 500 bikes are available in 'stations' around 300 metres apart. Members can take the bikes using a swipe card and return them to any station and everything is computer controlled.
Similar schemes are already up and running in Gerona, Seville, Cordoba and Barcelona, whose bicing scheme has been hugely successful with 200,000 users in the city.
Barcelona's head bicing honcho, has just been in Ibiza to explain the benefits of the scheme to councillors so that the scheme can hit the ground running come the end of the year.
