The towns of Ibiza are getting ready for the big Mardi Gras celebrations known locally as 'Carnaval.' Here we mark the start of Lent with lots of feasting (the word carnaval is derived from the Latin meaning farewell to meat) parades, processions and fancy dress competitions.

San Antonio has just released its Carnaval 2009 programme which has a few quirky departures from tradition.

Yabba Dabba Doo Day

Thursday 19th 14.00 – Dijous Llarder, BBQ, games and fancy dress at Cala Gracio
Friday 20th – Fancy Dress aquagym party at the municipal pool
Saturday 21st 19.00 – Kids' Carnaval party in the marquee
Saturday 21st – 21.30 – Adults' Carnaval party in the marquee with music, competitions prizes and fun
Tuesday 24th 17.00 – The Big Parade along the main streets.
