between 300 to 500 bikes

Ibiza is to follow Barcelona's lead by introducing the new phenomenon of 'Bicing' (biking), but only in 2009. This is a scheme to encourage the use of bicycles throughout the city by making it really easy to hire them for short periods of time.

What happens is that when you join the scheme you're given a swipe card which unlocks a bike from a special bike station. You can then use the bike and leave it at any of the other bike stations around town – again using your swipe card – and the computer control centre knows just where all the bikes are.

Non Computerised Bike Station

The scheme will kick off with between 300 to 500 bikes based at stations in the port, the new bus station, and the beaches of Talamanca, Figueretes and Playa de'n Bossa. The council wants to wait until 2009 to commence it because by then life on the road for two wheelers will be much easier. Planned bus lanes and improvements including new one way systems and stricter speed limits in town will have come into effect.

Sounds like a great idea – I wonder if there'll be a bike station right at the top of Dalt Vila?
