Gardening Ibiza Style

ploughing up 27 metres of plants

Our jokey article about sleepy Ibiza drivers last week proved to be ominously prophetic. Over the weekend four young men in an all terrain vehicle did a bit of gardening Ibiza style. Their motor left the road at 3.50 am and ploughed through a gardened area, ploughing up 27 metres of plants and finished up embedded in a palm tree. The driver failed a breath test and police say they don't know if the crash was caused by the driver – who is unable to help them in their enquiries – drifting off or just by being so drunk!

Meanwhile, the local police of Ibiza – they look after the urban centres of the island – have released their motoring statistics for 2006. They issued a staggering 15,465 fines to the drivers of badly parked cars.

By this we don't mean a bit too close to the car behind or not straightened up properly – this doesn't merit a second glance in Ibiza. Badly parked means for example blocking the entrance to the emergency department of the hospital or parking right in front of the fire station gates.

However, as high as the figures are, Ibicencos can find some solace in the fact that their Menorcan cousins were issued with over 50,000 fines in the same period!
