trotting - an exciting spectacle
It's such a shame that one of Ibiza's most exciting sporting events receives such little publicity. The equestrian sport of trotting races has been taking place at the San Rafael Hippodrome for years but very few tourists ever visit the track, probably because the publicity for the events is so low key – a few posters stuck in shop windows.
Could this be one of the reasons why the stadium in is a little 'neglected?' Hopefully the situation may now change as it has been announced that the Consell Insular (island Council) is to buy the Hippodrome for around €4 million.
They intend to make many improvements to it so that the sport of trotting will be promoted as it should be and also to use it for other events. In the past it has been used for motorbike and stock car racing and disco diva Gloria Gaynor gave a concert there earlier this year.
We think improving the Hippodrome will help to create an interest in trotting - an exciting spectacle and a great way to spend a summer's evening for thousands of people.
