a much more convenient energy source
It's been talked about for years and now the project to construct an undersea pipeline bringing natural gas to Ibiza actually appears to be happening. The company Enagas has started the preliminary works, mostly obtaining all the necessary paperwork, for the construction and administration of the 'gasoduct.'
The project will bring natural gas from a central junction in the province of Valencia to the coast at Oliva, some 58 kilometres away. From there the pipeline will be laid undersea and will reappear on dry land near San Antonio, where it will provide a much more convenient energy source than the containers of butane gas which are currently and commonly used.
The whole project should be completed by 2007 and will cost €267 million.
