Lovers of fresh water in Ibiza will be pleased to here that more drinking water is on its way courtesy of an increase in capacity of the desalination plant in San Antonio. Soon, the plant’s production of fresh water will increase from 12,000 cubic metres per day to 17,500, meaning that areas connected by the underground network of pipes like Santa Eulalia and Ibiza Town could benefit.
Meanwhile in Santa Gertrudis, where wells have been polluted by a petrol spillage from the giant tanks of the town’s petrol station, the process has started to decontaminate the water supply. Using micro-organisms, nutrients and oxidants the whole process could take up to 5 years and will cost a cool €740,000.
