The Green party, Els Verds, have achieved a significant victory in the borough of Santa Eulalia with the demolition of an eight hundred metre long wall and two small buildings. The constructions in question were in the beautiful area of Pou d´es Lleó and belonged to a gigantic villa known as Las Mayoas, originally built as a summer residence for one of Franco's ministers, and now owned by some Mexicans. The problem was that the wall, a metre and a half high, and topped with barbed wire, cut the public footpath down to the coastline for anyone wishing to bathe, and effectively gave the owners their own private beach. The green campaign of phone calls, letters and meetings, had lasted since 1995 until last week when the coastal authorities ordered the demolition.
