..the new meter will standardise these rates across the whole of the island.
From February 2003 all 112 licensed taxis in Ibiza town will use a taximeter to calculate the fare and by Easter all taxis in Ibiza will use them. Currently a standard fare is charged between two set points, for example a hotel and town centre, and all drivers carry a list to calculate the charge. Amazingly, each borough has different rates for journeys, and the new meter will standardise these rates across the whole of the island. The normal charge per kilometre travelled will be 76 cents with, of course, extras for luggage (50cents), dogs (€3), getting in the taxi (€2). In addition travelling on fiestas will cost more, as will not moving at all, as the meter just keeps on going even when you're stuck in a traffic queue!
