Coaching Session 4 - Clearing out the Anxieties

I just seem to have my mind filled with anxieties… I can’t stop worrying about things I have done, or that I feel guilty about and keep feeling overwhelmed. Well done for speaking out… this is the first step.

Anxieties, fears and worries are all monsters in the closet, kep in our memories for our chattering monkey mind to drag out and haunt and taunt us with. They are not the truth and they are distortions, perspectives that skew the reality. And they can have a huge amount of power over our health and happiness, creating nervous tension, stress, sadness – even depression.

Your power over them is by seeing them for what they are, naming them, shaming them and replacing them with a positive belief that helps you feel (at least a bit better) – better enough to begin to breathe yourself into being present. Because breathing deeply and in a controlled way can help you become present.

When you are present, you can notice all worries, anxieties and fears fade away.  They live in the past and we project them into the future based on past experiences and old beliefs that have been lumped on us by other people, the press, the television, our mothers and schools and society. Being mindful – being in the moment – being present – being totally in the now – whilst these phrases might sound abstract yet aspirational, the best way of exploring what they mean is by breathing – and enjoying the benefits:

To begin your day (or your night-shift):

Find a calm place where you can have peace and privacy – preferably outdoors. Plant your feet on the floor and roll back your shoulders, opening up your chest so your lungs and heart can expand. Bring both hands over your heart and breath slowly and deeply in through your nose for a count of 5 and into your heart and your hands.  Feel your lungs expand and hold. Exhale for a count of 5. Focus on your breath completely, give your breath a colour, a feel good, calming, loving colour that your breath can carry inside you to fill you up within. Repeat 5 times – notice the difference.

Repeat this for a week in the morning and in the evening. Increase this to 10 times whenever you are ready and you can.
