Around the island of Ibiza: get mobile!

Exploring the island...It's a great feeling to know you could do several different things each day and never have to do the same thing twice, unless you choose to, and still leave a load of fresh experiences to enjoy your next visit. Now that Ibiza is networked with a super infrastructure of new roads, just a short journey will bring you into another scene. But to enjoy all this, you've got to have wheels, if only for a few days. Of course the whole idea of getting mobile is to get away and do your own thing - perfectly possible in paradise!

Escape the concrete jungle!

The village of San MiguelThe most delightful surprise, especially when you've come from the concrete jungle, are the beautiful, green inland landscapes where nature has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Ibiza's hills, with their softly rounded undulations, are so very easy on the eye. No great effort is required to climb the pine forested hills, or raise your eyes (as opposed to stretching your neck!) to appreciate the picture-postcard panoramic views.

Time is meaningless

Sheep grazing in the countrysideUp in them thar hills, shady picnic areas with superb views are yours for the choosing. The uniquely soothing tranquility and solitude of unspoiled landscapes in perfect weather acts like a balm, gently unwinding stress. Time is meaningless, only the moment matters. This is the greatest environment for tuning into your inner self, finding peace within and being in harmony with nature. Well, you'll never know till you've tried it, and what have you got to lose? Why d'you think the residents are so laid back!

Harrod's prickly pears

Prickly PearsOnce you leave any of the three main towns, you'll see the local farmhouses with their flat roofs, thick, stone walls and picturesque arches. Terraces of dry stone walling embrace the hills. Orange and lemon groves, grapevines and prickly pear cactuses (their fruit costs a fortune at Harrods!), share the landscape of almond, fig, pine and algarroba trees (their fruit, the carob bean, is used as a health sweetener in England).

Charming little villages

The village of San JuanYour route should take in the charming villages of inland Ibiza, they make idyllic stops for a refreshing drink and walkabout. Village life centres on the local church and the shop cum bar. Here's a wonderful opportunity to be with the real Ibicencos and see a simple and satisfyingly different side of life. As I write this, I am thinking especially of Santa Inés and San Mateo in the San Antonio area and Santa Gertrudis, San Carlos and San Miguel, not far from Santa Eulalia. A little further south are Jesus, San Raphael and San Jose all of which have become somewhat more urbanised in the past ten years, yet still retain their Ibicenco charm.

The church at San CarlosYou'll need to be mobile to visit Ibiza's most famous beauty spot, Portinatx, where the lushly tropical locations for 'South Pacific' were filmed. The cool caves of Cova Santa, off the San José road, the nude beach at Es Cavallet and the salt flats at Salinas, the two hotels built into the high rocks in the port of San Miguel, the tiny Moorish village of Balafi... There's so much to see and enjoy...

All roads lead to the sea

Es Portixol in the NorthSooner or later, every road leads to a sea view, whether it is atop a hill with vistas of interestingly shaped offshore islands in the panorama of sea below, or sloping down to the translucent waters of a rocky inlet, ideal for a day's fishing; an uninhabited sandy cove with invitingly crystalline waters, or a magnificent beach. Ibiza's entire coastline shelters a variety of sandy coves and beaches, many flying the EEC Blue Flag, which invite swimming, snorkelling and sea sports. Even in the crowded months of July and August, you can find you own private getaway paradise if you get mobile!

Ibiza's glorious coastline

The bay of Cala BassaThe other dimension to getting mobile is on the sea. Day trips, cruises and ferries on the blue, blue Mediterranean will show you the magic of Ibiza's glorious coastline, the myriad blues of the sea around her shore, the offshore islands, her nearby sister island of Formentera, and the variety of popular beaches each resort offers.

So get mobile to make the most of your holiday. This wonderful island has so many beautiful experiences waiting for you. Your lasting reward will be magical memories. And you will return.
